Bibliography on a CD-ROM

LJUBLJANA – The National and University Library in Ljubljana presented the Slovenian Bibliography on a CD-ROM at a press conference yesterday. The first compact disc contains a bibliographic inventory of the Slovenian press published between the years 1989 and 1994. Bibliographic data was taken from the COBIB database (in the COMARC structure), and the software for the compact disc (Windows environment) was prepared by i-Rose from Laško.

The Slovene bibliography, an important bibliographic work representing the nation’s creativity, has been published by the National and University Library in Ljubljana since 1945. It is available in printed form in the COBIB on-line mutual catalog, in which more than a hundred Slovene libraries participate today. Now it is also available on a CD-ROM, which is the first bibliographic database on this medium in our country. PC 386 is enough to use the CD-ROM, and users will be able to search for data by various parameters, for example by author, title, content, book collection, year of publication, publisher, etc. The CD-ROM contains more than 16,000 bibliographic records of books, and represents, in particular, book production since 1989. In addition to publications by Slovenian publishing houses, works by Slovenian authors published abroad are also included. The CD-ROM is expected to be updated with new data three times a year. The price will not exceed the amount of 12,500 tolars and the main value of the CD form is greater accessibility. In addition to the bibliography of books, NUIC also plans to prepare a bibliography of serial publications and articles on a CD. In this case, they will cover the data they have prepared since 1991. A bibliography of articles published between 1797 and 1945 is already available to a lesser extent on electronic media and will soon be available to users on a CD-ROM server. Once they will complete the entire database, it will also be available on a standalone CD. The

Slovenian bibliography on a CD-ROM is intended not only for libraries, but also for a wide range of users, especially publishers and booksellers in Slovenia and the world, as it provides insight into the entire Slovenian book production. The speaker at the presentation, Mr. Jože Osterman, State Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, congratulated the employees of NUK for the important work they had done in about a year, despite personnel problems.
